Writer Michael P. Daley formed First To Knock in 2017. The company is based in Michigan City, Indiana. It is independently operated.

First To Knock independently distributes its own titles in the United States. First To Knock also distributes books and records by the New York City-based archivist and publisher Boo-Hooray. Public Knowledge Books distributes First To Knock titles in the U.K., Europe, Asia, and elsewhere.
